Welcome to Trailblazers

Welcome to Trailblazers.

We had a great first session.  Each session will start in Mrs. Fake's room.  We'll have a healthy snack and then focus on a topic for thinking, writing and then discussion.  Today we talked about earth manners.  Students had great ideas about littering, not scaring wild animals and being safe in the woods.

Many students are familiar with GSB's traditional woods landmark, Big Rock.  We took the path past big rock, navigating a mixture of root arms and mud to a place that Ms. Kristie's class calls Salamander City. From Salamander City, we split up into 2 teams, one taking the high road, a more established trail, and one taking a lower section of woods to meet at a stream where Mrs. Fake's class has been documenting water levels.  Each group made discoveries along the way, finding other evolving projects, evidence of bugs and evidence of animals.  Upon arrival at the stream, students quickly took to exploring.  Some students made stick structures and other students found "Mud Valley."  They also took to the notion of naming different landmarks during our journey - other notable names include "Death Valley," a pile of deadfall and branches, as well as "The Village" where we found evidence of a very square and stately log cinched about 7 feet above the ground.   Familiarizing ourselves with the woods was a great step toward establishing a trail and mapping it. After exploring, students then finished up our day by beginning to mark the less established trail with sticks, pine cones and "branch-brooming."

What a nice way to end the week.  If you'd like to see more pictures, visit:Trailblazers Session 1.
